She put the sunshine in my pocket.

In the midst of what  was an unpredictable and utterly defeating day, week, month, year; one minute changed everything.  I can honestly say that it was just one little thing. At the exact moment in my life where I really needed it; an absolute stranger lifted my spirits re-energized my soul, and “put the sunshine in my pocket”.

A little about me and my issues at that time. I had 2 compression fractures in my thoracic spine, issues with the c2-6, and t2-4 disc height space, pinched nerves, and a broken foot (NO weight baring).. I couldn’t drive, work, play, carry anything over 2 lb, use crutches, push my own wheel chair… I had a 4 wheel walker with breaks to wheel myself around. It was an adventure just trying to go to the corner store; not to mention traveling across the lower mainland to the Dr’s, specialist, and physio appointments weekly.

So on on of my trips four cities from home to my Dr’s office. I was having issues doing my” push n hop” with my walker, getting to and on the bus. By the time I parked that ruthless beast on the bus it took me 4 hrs 3 bus tickets cause of missing buses or time running out. Well a lady on the bus over heard the driver telling me that my time had just run out and I had to pay again. I paid my fare and just sat in the closest seat I could find.  Four stops later I got off the bus near my Drs office with a small crowd of people.  I rolled directly to the bus bench, just sit and rest a little more.

The other “Lady” that was sitting near the front had gotten off as well. She was a few years older than me and had a walker to carry her air tank. There was such a conviction and  purpose behind every step as the lady approached me intent on getting my attention. While extending her hand to me, in a warm gentle voice she simply said “Excuse me dear, um my friend just left town and she didn’t need this book of bus tickets. I know how it is catching buses around town pushing with these things. Please take them I have a bus pass, I would hate to see them go to waste.”

I barley had time to say anything let alone thanks and she was about face ready to go, replying “Just pay it forward dear”.

Honestly, that made tears come to my eyes. It was one of those life reminders that you have to be thankful for everything you do have and not dwell on whats not going right.  The cup is truly half full. It could be the smallest act of kindness… But it means so much and makes a world of difference.. more than words can express. Since then I am on a constant mission to find creative ways to pay it forward, and  “put the sunshine in someone else’s pocket”.
